Professor Walther Hug Prize

The Professor Walther Hug Prize is an oriented annual science award , which for the best at universities in Switzerland removed dissertations of the Law of the Professor Walther Hug Foundation for the promotion of legal research , based in St. Gallen is awarded.

Walther Hug (1898–1980) , a jurist from the canton of St. Gallen , set up the foundation named after him in 1978 and bequeathed almost all of his fortune to it after his death.

Every year, the law faculties of Switzerland are invited by the foundation to submit those dissertations that have been awarded summa cum laude . These must relate to Swiss law or have significant references to it if they concern a foreign or international topic. The Board of Trustees selects the best from the 45 to 70 papers submitted each year. Between 25 and 35 Professor Walther Hug Prizes are awarded annually. The prize is currently endowed with CHF 3,000 . (As of 2019)

This annually awarded prize should not be confused with the (large) Walther Hug Prize awarded by the same foundation every two to four years to Swiss researchers who have particularly distinguished themselves through legal achievements .
