Progressive Rail is an American railroad and holding company based in Lakeville , Minnesota .
history
The company was founded in 1996 by David J. Fellon. Initially, the company began shunting operations on the Airlake Industrial Park south of Lakeville. For this purpose, the independent Airlake Terminal Railway was founded in 2002. The company chose the paint scheme for the discontinued Minnesota, Northfield and Southern Railroad .
In 2000, operations began on the Nesbitt (Auto Club Junction) -Minneapolis route, known as the Dan Patch Line. From 2004 the industrial area in Faribault will be served and the Cannon Valley Railroad established to operate the route between Northfield and Cannon Falls. In addition, operations on the route between Lakeville and Northfield (Jesse James Line) and on the Eagandale Line were taken over. Progressive Rail has route usage rights between Northfield and Faribault. In the same year, the Wisconsin Northern Railroad, the first company outside of Minnesota, went into operation. The line initially leased was purchased in 2009.
In 2005 Lon van Gemert became the company's Chief Executive Officer.
On July 23, 2007, Progressive Rail took over the Central Midland Railway from the owner of Indiana Rail Road , Tom Hoback. The former route of the Rock Island was leased by the Missouri Central Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad. From 2007 to around 2012, a section of the Union Pacific between Merriam and Montgomery (Minnesota) was operated under the name Montgomery Short Line.
In October 2012, the company took over the Iowa Traction Railroad and the Crab Orchard and Egyptian Railroad .
In January 2013, Craig McKenzie was named Chairman of the Board. and in November 2016 Chief Executive Officer.
In 2016, the Iowa Southern Railway was founded with the takeover of the Appanoose County Community Railroad . In June 2017, the Piedmont and Northern Railroad began operating on behalf of the State of North Carolina.
In 2018, several acquisitions were made and new operating areas were opened. From June, a shunting operation as the Chicago Junction Railway in Elk Grove Village was started on a route leased from the Union Pacific . From August, Progressive Rail took over the operation of the Santa Cruz Branch Rail Line with the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad from the Iowa Pacific Holdings ( Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay Railway ). This was followed at the end of August by the start of operations on the Clackamas Valley Railway, a connecting railway to an industrial area in Clackamas (Oregon) . In December, the Chewelah – Columbia Gardens section of the Kettle Falls International Railway ( Omnitrax ) in Washington was taken over and continued to operate as the St. Paul & Pacific Northwest Railroad.

Locomotives
Progressive Rail uses seven EMD SW1500s, one EMD SD39 and one EMD SD38-2, as well as two EMD SD40-2 and EMD GP15-1 each on their main lines.
