Progressive Railroading is an American magazine for the North American railroad industry. It has been published since 1972.

In 1958 the magazine "Railway Materials" was founded by Philip Murphy and in 1963 it was renamed "Progressive Railroading". In 1971, he joined forces with the founder and editor of "Modern Railroads" Frank J. Richter (1916–2013) and founded the Murphy-Richter Publishing in Chicago. Richter became editor of "Progressive Railroading". After the death of Phil Murphy in 1989, the publisher and with it the magazine were sold to the publishing staff Ron Mitchell and Rich Zemencik. These sold the magazine in 1994 to the Milwaukee- based publishing house Trade Press Publishing Corporation (since 2008 Trade Press Media Group). The publisher, and thus Progressive Railroading, has been part of the German Forum Media Group since January 2018 .

The magazine appears monthly with a circulation of around 25,000 copies. Car & Locomotive Buyers 'Guide & Yearbook and the Track Buyers' Guide & Yearbook are also published once a year.

In addition to the magazine, the Internet platform progressiverailroading.com is operated, which supplements the magazine with the latest news and job offers in the rail industry.
