Charles W. Moorman
Charles Wicliffe (Wick) Moorman IV (born 1953 in New Orleans (Mississippi, United States)) is an American railroad manager. Charles Moorman was Chairman and CEO of Norfolk Southern Corporation and President of the state rail company Amtrak from September 1, 2016 to December 31, 2017 .
Life
The son of a specialist in medieval English literature and professor at the University of Southern Mississippi Charles W. Moorman III graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in civil engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology . At the same time he worked as an intern at the Southern Railway since 1970 . His first area of work was in the entertainment and transportation departments. In 1987 he took a severance payment and began studying at Harvard Business School . After graduating with a Master of Business Administration in 1989, he returned to work for the railway company. He has worked in various management positions, including Vice President Corporate Planning and Services, Vice President IT, Vice President Human Resources and Labor Affairs. Later he was responsible for the telecommunications division T³ (T-Cubed).
From 2004 to 2013 he was President of the Norfolk Southern Railway . He was CEO from November 1, 2005 to June 1, 2015, Executive Director from January 25, 2005 to January 5, 2016, and Executive Chairman of Norfolk Southern Corporation from February 1, 2006 to October 1, 2015 .
In 2010 he received the Railroader of the Year award from Railway Age magazine .
During his tenure as President of Norfolk Southern, he ensured that steam locomotives could be used again for tourist purposes on the company's routes and he supported the restoration of the N&W class J No. 611 steam locomotive .
On August 19, 2016, it was announced that he would be reelected as the new president of Amtrak, the state-owned passenger transport company, effective September 1, 2016. He ended this activity on December 31, 2017. He was succeeded by Richard H. Anderson .
Charles Moorman has served on the Chevron Board of Directors since 2012, as well as a member of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, the National Academy of Engineering, the University of Virginia Medical Center Operating Board, the Virginia Business Council, and Chairman of the Nature Conservancy of Virginia.
He is married and has two children.
