John C. Hellmann

John "Jack" C. Hellmann (born 1971 ) is an American railroad manager. He heads the shortline company Genesee and Wyoming . In 2018 he received the Railroader of the Year award from Railway Age magazine .

Life

John C. Hellmann studied from 1988 to 1992 at Princeton University with a bachelor's degree , then he received his Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania . He studied Sinology at the Johns Hopkins University of Advanced International Studies and completed his studies with a master's degree.

From 1992 to 1994 he worked for Weyerhaeuser Company in Japan and China. From 1997 to 1999 he was an investment banker with Schroder & Co . and then until January 2009 at Lehman Brothers in the Emerging Communication Group. In January 2000 he started working for the rail holding company Genesee and Wyoming Industries. He was Chief Financial Officer until April 2005, and since May 2, 2005, he has been President responsible for business operations. On June 1, 2007, he succeeded company founder Mortimer B. Fuller III as Chief Executive Officer . Since May 24, 2017 he has been Chairman of the Board . He has been a member of the company's supervisory board since 2006. During his tenure, further expansion in North America took place through the takeover of the Ohio Central Railroad System , the RailAmerica and the British rail company Freightliner .

In 2017 he received the Railroad Innovator Award from Progressive Railroading magazine and in March 2018 he received the Railroader of the Year award from Railway Age magazine.

He is married and has three children.
