Procope
In linguistics, the term prokope ( Greek προκοπή “progression”) refers to the elimination ( elision ) of one or more speech sounds at the beginning of a word that occurs in the course of a speech or sound change . A well-known example is the origin of the German word bishop from the Latin episcopus .
An apheresis currently observed in some German- speaking regions is the elimination of “ he- ” or “ hi- ” in the words “ out ” or “ out ”, which leads to “ naus ” in southern German-speaking regions and “ out ” in north-western Germany coincide. In general, it is mostly realized in spoken colloquial language , while apart from verbatim speech it does not occur in written German or in the somewhat more formal standard German .
The elision of individual sounds or syllables in general, i.e. not only in the context of a sound change, but in particular as a stylistic device or poetic instrument, is called apheresis .
