Prostitution is legal in Tajikistan , but related activities such as recruiting, procuring and keeping brothels are prohibited. Prostitution has increased in the country since the collapse of the Soviet Union . UNAIDS estimates that there are 14,100 sex workers in Tajikistan. The official government figures for 2015 were 1,777 prostitutes and 194 brothels. Prostitution occurs on the street and in bars, restaurants, nightclubs and saunas. The HIV prevalence among sex workers is 3.5% according to UNAIDS.

Since the recruitment is a regulatory offense, arrested prostitutes have been fined and released, while procurers are prosecuted and potentially sentenced to up to eight years in prison. In 2015, a new law was passed that doubled the fine for recruitment and extended the sentence to 15 days of house arrest.

As the poorest country to emerge from the Soviet Union, economic hardship is a major reason women in the country enter into prostitution.

Sex trafficking is a problem in the country.

Sex tourism in Tajikistan

Tajikistan is mainly a sex tourism destination for men from Afghanistan . The comparatively loose regime in Tajikistan, the country's poverty and a similar language ( Persian ) make it attractive to Afghans, even if a Tajik visa could cost up to US $ 500 . Tajikistan has a bad reputation in Afghanistan for men who go to Tajikistan can tell their wives that they are going to India .

Raid 2014

In June 2014, Interior Minister Ramazon Rahimov voiced concerns about the rise in “immoral crimes” and ordered crackdown on prostitution. Brothels should be searched and sex workers arrested and forcibly tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases . 505 sex workers were arrested in the capital Dushanbe in the first few days . 450 had a sexually transmitted disease , according to a statement by the minister . 30 of the women were fined.

The prostitutes reported that this led to rape, sexual humiliation and police officers demanding sex in order to release the sex workers from custody.
