Protapion fulvipes is a beetle from the family of Brentidae , subfamily Apioninae that in the relationship of the weevil belongs.
features
The beetles reach a body length of 1.8 to 2.2 millimeters. Their long oval body is shiny black. The sensor elements are wider toward the spindle-shaped probe club. The antenna whip is only colored yellow in the basal area. In males, the antennae are halfway along the trunk (rostrum), in females they are behind the middle of the trunk. The pronotum is wider than the head. It is dense and strongly punctured. At the rear it has a clear central groove. Rows of dots run lengthways across the wing covers . The legs are predominantly colored yellow. Only the apical end of the tibia and the tarsi are black.
distribution
Protapion fulvipes occurs in the Palearctic . The species is widespread in Europe. It is common everywhere in Central Europe. Their occurrence extends to North Africa and the Middle East.
Way of life
The beetles can be seen from March to September. They feed oligophagous on different types of clover . The females lay their eggs from April / May. The larvae hatch after about 10 days. The larvae develop in the inflorescences of white clover ( Trifolium repens ), Swedish clover ( Trifolium hybridum ) and bog clover ( Trifolium spadiceum ). They can act as seed pests. After about 20 days the larvae pupate and after another 10 days the adults of the new generation appear. In late autumn, the beetles gather on trees and bushes before they hibernate under the leaves.
