Proteus (son of Aegyptus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Proteus ( ancient Greek Πρωτεύς Prōteús ) is in Greek mythology one of the 50 sons of Aigyptus , the twin brother of Danaos . His mother was Argyphic , so Lynkeus , Busiris , Enkelados , Lykos and Daiphron were his biological brothers.

For the mass wedding of the 50 sons of Aegyptos with the 50 daughters of Danaos, at which lot decided on the pairing, he was assigned Gorgophone without lot because of the royal origin of his mother , while his brother Lynkeus Hypermestra for the same reason , the eldest daughter of Danaos and biological sister of the Gorgophone. Like his other brothers - who were married to the daughters of Europe , a daughter of Neilos , and with the exception of Lynkeus - he was killed by his wife on their wedding night. In Hyginus Mythographus , the Danaide he married is called Scylla ( Latinized Scylla ).
