The Protiaridae are a family of the Hydrozoa (Hydrozoa). The family currently includes about eight species.

features

The hydroid polyps form stolonally from crawling stolons. The hydrant sit mostly on short stems (hydrocauli). Hydrorhiza and Hydrocaulus are covered by perisarc, which forms a cup-like envelope around the base of the hydrant. The hydrant has a wreath of filform tentacles that alternate with large nettle cells . Gonophores are not known. The medusas have four marginal tentacles that extend from the four large hollow tentacle bases. There are four simple radial channels and one ring channel. The mouth has four simple lips. The gonads sit interradially and show a smooth surface. Mesesenteries can be formed in the gastric space. The edge can be provided with cirrus-like tentacles. Ocelli can occur in some forms .

Geographical occurrence

The family is distributed worldwide from the tropics to the polar regions.
