Common barberry ( Berberis vulgaris )

Protoberberine alkaloids are natural products of the isoquinoline alkaloid type. They occur in many plant families, u. a. in the poppy family , the barberry family and the laurel family . The common barberry ( Berberis vulgaris ) gave the alkaloid berberine its name.

Representative

Protoberberine alkaloids often occur as tetrahydroprotoberberine or as protoberberinium salts. The best-known representative is the berberine . Other alkaloids example Coptisin , canadine , Coreximin , scoulerine and many more.

use

Berberine is toxic and a yellow dye. Berberine can be used to dye silk, cotton and leather. It also has a breath-stimulating, antibacterial and antifungal effect. In Chinese medicine, the extract containing protoberberine is used as a remedy for stomach and digestive problems. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Coptisine affects the muscles of the digestive organs. It relaxes the muscles so that cramps can be reduced.

synthesis

By reacting with formaldehyde, alkaloids of the tetrahydroprotoberberine type (e.g. corexiamine) can be synthesized from benzylisoquinoline alkaloids.
