Proxomitron is a proprietary , configurable HTTP - proxy software, which has received worldwide user community mainly because of their flexible filter language and its stability. Proxomitron runs under the commercial operating systems Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and Windows 8, as well as 8.1. With CrossOver 7.1.0 (Windows 2000 Bottle) or Darwine it can be even under Mac OS X use.
Thanks to the filter language, there are many possible uses for manipulating web content. The main tasks, however, have established themselves as the elimination of unwanted Internet advertising , pop-up windows, dangerous or “curious” scripts , tracking pixels and anything else that hinders or disrupts Internet surfing.
In addition to filters, with which the the browser received the source code of a web page can be manipulated, Proxomitron also offers the option of HTTP - header edit. In this way, the communication between the browser and the web server itself can be controlled, not just the result (e.g. the website).
In order to generalize filters and to be able to apply them to whole groups of websites, lists (in the form of text files) are used, which can be easily expanded by the user. The program is offered with many pre-configured standard filters and lists so that even less experienced users can benefit directly from it.
Proxomitron uses a dialect of regular expressions that is optimized for HTML . Its special properties, such as the intelligent handling of spaces, quotation marks and other HTML specifics, as well as the presence of a whole series of auxiliary functions that can be used directly in the regular expression, enable efficient manipulation of almost all aspects of communication between the browser and the web server.
The program was developed by Scott R. Lemmon . With the completion of the Naoko 4.5-j version in 2003, the author stopped further development. Scott R. Lemmon died on May 1, 2004 at the age of 36. However, the German-language distribution will continue to be maintained and updated by Michael Bürschgens.
Under the name Proximodo was established in October 2004, an open-source - clones developed by Proxomitron, which takes up the existing features and includes some enhancements. However, the further development was already shut down a year later.
License
The program was released as shonenware . The author understands Shonenware to be free software with voluntary license acquisition in the form of the purchase of a CD, DVD or similar from the Shonen Knife group .
