Privoxy is a filtering proxy for the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), often used in combination with Tor and Squid . Privoxy is a web proxy with advanced filtering options to protect privacy , filter website content, manage HTTP cookies , control access, remove advertisements, popups, etc. It supports both stand-alone systems and networks with multiple users.
Privoxy is programmed in C and released as free software under the terms of version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPL). It runs under Windows (32 bit), AmigaOS , BeOS , OS / 2 and most Unix derivatives ( Linux , FreeBSD , OpenWrt , ...). Mac OS X is now supported by Privoxy again after an interruption in 2009, but can also be installed via MacPorts or translated directly from the sources.
The name "Privoxy" was borrowed from the English phrase "Privacy Enhancing Proxy" ("proxy that improves privacy").
Functionality
It examines the outgoing HTTP traffic on Views unwanted content and information that reveals, for example, the browser on his system and alert the user traceable and identifiable as referrer , browser / system identifiers, information about configurations, etc. Views of banner ads or tracking pixels are not sent at all, which increases surfing speed and saves data traffic. Incoming HTTP traffic is scanned for undesired content, which can then be filtered. In order to identify unwanted content, source texts and addresses are examined for typical characteristics such as typical image sizes, origin from relevant known addresses or from clearly named folders. Dangerous, "nosy" or annoying scripts are cropped.
Privoxy is fully configurable via configuration files; any actions can be switched on and off. The configuration takes place either via a built-in utility program that uses the web browser as a user interface or via any text editor .
history
Privoxy is based on Internet Junkbuster, which had its last official release in 1998 (version 2.0.2). Up to 2000 (version 2.0.2-10), Stefan Waldherr organized improved versions that incorporated numerous improvements from the user community. After a thorough revision of the code base, it later became Privoxy, which reached its first stable release (3.0) in August 2002.
In addition to Privoxy, the Galactica Proxy was developed from the Internet Junkbuster code, which visualizes surfing data in real time. The Junkbuster also served as a model for WWWOFFLE .
