Psacasta exanthematica is a bug from the family of the shield bugs (Scutelleridae).
features
The bugs are 8.0 to 11.0 millimeters long. They have a domed, yellowish to black-brown colored body, which in some individuals can have a purple tint. The animals are densely covered with numerous white spots. There are three slightly larger white spots on the scutellum .
Occurrence and habitat
The species is distributed around the entire Mediterranean area and east to Central Asia. On both sides of the Alps, it penetrates north to Central Europe and has been found in Germany in the Upper Rhine Rift and in southeastern Bavaria. In Austria there are regular records in the east in Lower Austria, Vienna and Burgenland. It is only sporadically observed in Tyrol and Carinthia. It is rare everywhere in Central Europe.
Psacasta exanthematica colonizes dry, temperature- favored , open habitats.
Way of life
The bugs live among the predatory plants (Boraginaceae), especially adder heads ( Echium ) and ox tongues ( Anchusa ), rarely among other genera of the family. Due to their coloring, they are well adapted to the similarly colored, dried out basal leaves of their food plants. The overwintering takes place as an imago . One generation is trained every year. Nymphs appear until September, the adults of the new generation from August.
