Image program

The Psalter of Louis the Saint contains a calendar with ecclesiastical memorial days as well as the Latin text of the psalms from the Old Testament and is concluded with texts from several prayers. In the then usual choice of scenes, the painters did not depict illuminations for the psalm texts, but related scenes from the Old Testament. The full-page miniatures were painted on parchment, probably selected by the workshop management for the client or together with them. The pictures show important people in the Bible like Jacob , Moses , the military leader Joshua and the first king of Israel Saul . The pictures show the people and scenes from their lives. One of the clerks in the workshop has included explanations in French on the following pages.

style

Despite the different hands that created the pictures, they are constructed in a similar way. The upper part is given a roof, which is reminiscent of the architectural features of the palace chapel Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Below that, on a gold background, divided by columns, two episodes from a cycle of images are shown.
