Pseudopoecilia is a three species comprehensive genus of the viviparous toothcarps (Poeciliinae). The distribution area extends from Colombia via Ecuador to the north of Peru .
features
The fish of this genus reach lengths between 2 and 4.5 cm. The basic body color is usually gray to golden brown. There are several thin, black horizontal stripes on the sides of the body. Some populations of Pseudopoecilia festae have a broad, black longitudinal band along the middle of the body instead of these horizontal stripes.
Distribution and way of life
Pseudopoecilia species mainly inhabit fast-flowing waters such as streams and rivers, but also ponds and spring waters on the Pacific slope of northwestern South America . Pseudopoecilia festae and Pseudopoecilia fria occur in Ecuador and in the south bordering Peru, Pseudopoecilia austrocolumbiana in southern Colombia. The fish prefer waters that are rich in vegetation.
Nothing is known about the diet in nature; small live food is recommended for aquariums . Females of Pseudopoecilia festae give birth to 3–8 fry about every 28 days.
