Psychological-technical assistant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Psychological-technical assistant is a health profession that emerged in Germany in the 1970s and was developed based on the medical-technical assistant . Like the pharmaceutical-technical assistant, it is abbreviated to PTA or, for better differentiation, to PsTA.

Fields of activity

In the data of the Federal Employment Agency there is the preliminary definition: "Psychological and technical assistants who support psychologists and psychologists in carrying out their scientific and practical tasks." Fields of employment include psychotherapeutic practices, clinics and social services (e.g. nursing homes for the elderly, educational homes, social advice centers), as well as collaboration in research or quality assurance . Specifically, it can be about the organizational management of the practice at a psychologist, the reception of patients / clients, the acceptance of telephone calls, the assistance with the execution of tests, the keeping of files as well as the collection and organization of data. Since the PTA is often the first point of contact for patients / clients, it is a profession in which organizational skills, friendly manners and interpersonal empathy are required. PTAs are generally subject to confidentiality . In the field of research, the field of activity can include support with empirical investigations, supervision of test subjects and literature research.

education

In contrast to the apprenticeship as a medical-technical assistant, this is a job profile for which one qualifies through further training , which usually lasts two to two and a half years. It is usually organized on a part-time basis and ends with a certificate. The job description is still relatively open. Due to the form of further training and the diverse fields of activity, people with an incomplete degree or lateral entrants can also build up a recognized professional activity in this way. In the critical examination of the new Bachelor / Master study structure for psychologists, the field of psychological-technical assistance also appears for psychologists with a bachelor's degree. Information on the bachelor's degree in psychology states: "The bachelor's degree qualifies you for psychological assistance and routine activities under the direction of highly qualified psychologists with a master's degree or diploma."
