Pterocactus reticulatus is a species of the genus Pterocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Pterocactus reticulatus grows in groups. The bulbous roots are up to 20 centimeters long. The unbranched, spherical to pear-shaped shoots are greyish purple to custom or olive green in color and are set with rhombic bumps. They become 2 to 3 inches long and 1 to 2 inches in diameter. A few inconspicuous glochids sit on the shoots . The single central spine is protruding and up to 5 millimeters long, sometimes it is missing. The comb-shaped, whitish to brownish radial spines are six per areole and are 2 to 5 millimeters long.
The white flowers appearing at the shoot tips are colored light pink and are 4 to 5 centimeters in diameter. The spherical fruits are 2 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Pterocactus reticulatus is distributed in central Argentina in the provinces of San Juan and Mendoza on stony, barren plains at altitudes of 1500 to 3000 meters. The species was first described in 1971 by Roberto Kiesling .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
