Pterotolithus is a genus fromthe Umberfishes family (Sciaenidae). It occurs in two species in the tropical coastal waters from the Bay of Bengal to Borneo .

features

Pterotolithus are elongated, slender fish about 40 to 50 cm in length. The large mouth is terminal and has a pair of well-formed canines in the upper and lower jaw. The anal fin starts in front of the middle of the soft rayed part of the dorsal fin and has 10 or 11 ( P. maculatus ) or 7 or 8 ( P. lateoides ) soft rays. The carrot-shaped swim bladder has many appendages that have well-developed and branched dorsal and ventral branches and do not extend into the head. The sagitta has a tadpole- like indentation with a J-shaped tail.
