The Ptilocodiidae are a marine family of the Hydrozoa (Hydrozoa). The family currently includes around 8 species.

features

The hydroid polyps are sessile, the hydrorhiza is stolonal, reticulate or crust-forming and is covered by naked coenosarc . The hydramths are polymorphic; H. can be differentiated into feeding, defense and sex polyps. The feeding polyps have no tentacles, while the defense polyps have four or more capitate tentacles, sometimes these are also filiform. The gonophores form on sexual polyps or feeding / sexual polyps. Propagation is by free jellyfish , Eumedosoide or sessile spores sacks. The medusae are approximately bell-shaped and can have a radial exumbrellar furrow. Refractive spots sit on the exumbrella. A nettle cell ring is formed at the edge. There may or may not be marginal tentacles. The tentacles, if present, are solid with a concentration of stinging cells at their apex. There are four radial channels and one ring channel. The manubrium is tubular, bottle-shaped with mouth arms that are provided with groups of nettle cells at the tip. The gonads sit adradially or interradially on the outside of the manubrium.

Geographical occurrence

The species known so far come mainly from the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. Tregoubovia Picard was described from the Mediterranean.
