Ptolemy Chennos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ptolemaios Chennos was a Greek writer (" Poikilograph ") and mythographer of the 1st century AD. He was the son of Hephaistion from Alexandria and the author of a biography of Aristotle . Only fragments of his works have survived, longer excerpts from his Kaine Historia .

The value of the Kaine Historia's news and source citations has been debated in the research. While Rudolf Hercher viewed most of the alleged quotations as falsifications in 1856 and many supported him in this view, Anton Chatzis advocated the authenticity of the quotations in 1914. The dissertation by Karl-Heinz Tomberg (1968) takes a mediating position between these extremes.
