Ptolemy Macron

Ptolemy Makron ( Greek  Πτολεμαῖος Μάκρων ; † 163 BC ) was a governor of the Ptolemies and Seleucids in the 2nd century BC. Chr.

Ptolemaios Makron came from Alexandria and probably belonged to an influential family at the Ptolemaic court. Between the years 180 and 168 BC He served as governor ( strategos ) of Cyprus , an important post that was always filled with close confidants of the royal family. Because he differed from King Ptolemy VI. saw not sufficiently appreciated, he changed 168 BC. On the side of the Syrian Seleucids, which resulted in a long-term dispute between them and the Egyptian Ptolemies over Cyprus.

Probably immediately after the defeat of the Seleucids against the rebellious Jews ( Maccabees ) in the Battle of Emmaus in the late summer of 165 BC. Ptolemy Makron was appointed governor of Koilesyria and Phenicia by King Antiochus IV to replace the hapless Ptolemy, son of Dorymenes . He tried to resolve the conflict with the Jews in a peaceful manner by being accommodating to them. After the death of Antiochus IV. However, this procedure was his undoing under the new regent Lysias , who demanded violent action against the uprising. Before Ptolemy Makron could be removed from his post, he committed suicide by poison.
