Ptychoptera contaminata is a mosquito in the family of the wrinkled mosquito (Ptychopteridae).

features

The mosquito reaches a body length of about 9 millimeters and has a shiny black body. On the side of the thorax a gray pollination is partially visible, the abdomen bears yellow transverse lines on the third to fifth tergite , the females also have spots on the side. The scutellum is colored yellow. The radial sector in the wing is four times longer than the basal transverse artery. There is a black point at the base of the wing and spots of the same color are at the root of the radial sector. There are also transverse spots in the middle of the wings.

Way of life and distribution

The animals are found in large parts of Europe; they are particularly absent on the Iberian Peninsula and large parts of the Balkans. They mainly colonize bank areas around lakes and slowly flowing streams. They are widely found in Central and Eastern Europe. The larvae develop in shallow water.
