Puente de María Cristina
The Puente de María Cristina ( Basque : Maria Kristina zubia ) is a neo-baroque bridge construction over the Urumea in San Sebastián in the Spanish Autonomous Community of the Basque Country . It connects the old town with the city center and the north train station as well as the bullring Plaza de Toros de Illumbe .
history
Construction began in 1893 with the construction of a wooden walkway as a construction aid, which was torn down one day before the inauguration of the bridge, which took place on January 20, 1905 on the feast day of St. Sebastian . The bridge was dedicated to Maria Christina , regent of Spain 1885–1902.
The local bank "Caja de Ahorros" (Sparkasse) financed the construction of the bridge through an interest-free loan with a term of 100 years. The architects were the Portuguese José Eugenio de Ribera and Julio M. Zapata from Madrid .
Building
The bridge was built from reinforced concrete , which was a novelty for the time. It has three arches with a span of 24 meters each. The total length of the bridge is 88 meters, its width around 20 meters. Two monumental pylons were erected at each of the two bridgeheads , which roughly correspond to the style of the bridge of Pont Alexandre III in Paris. Each of the four pylons carries an equestrian statue.
