background
In March 1994, the shipowners of the Puerto de Cillero formed a Sociedad anónima in order to jointly regulate the commercial issues of the fishing port as a company. This union had its origin in the association "Santiago Apóstol", a community of fishermen from 1923. The aim was to professionalize the fishing industry. The trigger was Law 8/93 of the Fisheries Association from 1993.
Puerto de Cillero is one of the well-known fishing ports on the Cantabrian Sea. The local fleet consists of around 90 fishing boats with around 1,200 jobs in the fish processing or auxiliary industry. The place has 1,853 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013). See also: Parroquias Viveiro .
