Location Puerto del Hambre

Puerto del Hambre (German: Hungerhafen) is a natural harbor on the Brunswick Peninsula on the north coast of the Strait of Magellan , around 60 km south of Punta Arenas in Chile . It was the scene of a catastrophically failed colonization in the 16th century. The small bay is north of the Punta Santa Ana peninsula, where Fuerte Bulnes is located. On the road from Punta Arenas to Puerto del Hambre there is a road mark that marks half the distance between the South Pole and the Chilean border with Peru.

history

In March 1584 Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa founded the settlement Rey Don Felipe at Puerto del Hambre . The first Spanish settlers starved to death due to the barren vegetation. The English pirate Thomas Cavendish found the ruins of the settlement in 1587. Around 300 settlers were either starved to death or frozen to death. He named the anchorage Port Famine .

In 1828 the English ship HMS Beagle reached Puerto de Hambre under captain Pringle Stockes. Between 1832 and 1834 Charles Darwin also traveled on the Beagle in the area south of Tierra del Fuego .

On September 21, 1843, John Williams Wilson founded the fortress Fuerte Bulnes. Although this settlement could only be maintained for a short time, the action was of lasting importance for the incorporation of the Strait of Magellan into Chilean territory.

Since February 1, 1968, the ruins of Puerto del Hambre have been a National Monument.
