Ruins of the "Red Fortress"

Puka Pukara (also Puca Pucara ) comes from the indigenous Quechua language and means "red fortress", which was probably derived from the red color of the stones - especially at dusk. These are ruins of an Inca fortification in Peru near Cusco in the province of Cusco .

Little is known about the history of Puka Pukara. The fortress was in all likelihood one of many permanent stations where the Inca relay runners were exchanged or goods were stored and where military troops, traveling merchants and pilgrims housed.

Due to its proximity, tourists usually visit the Puka Pukara facility from Cusco in connection with a visit to the Tambomachay water sanctuary and the ruins of the Inca fortress Sacsayhuamán .
