The Pullman National Monument is an American national monument in Chicago . It was designated by President Barack Obama by a Presidential Proclamation on February 19, 2015 with an area of 203 acres (82 ha). The site is also known as the Pullman District and Pullman Historic District .

history

George Mortimer Pullman built the first model and planned industrial city with production buildings and housing developments in the United States here. He used the Pullmann factory to manufacture the famous Pullman sleeping cars for the Pullman Palace Car Company . The site is one of the most famous corporate cities in the United States and the site of the violent Pullman strike of 1894.

Originally built outside of Chicago's city limits, it is now in the Pullman district, which includes the Pullman factory and the Florence Hotel , named after George Pullman's daughter. Also in the district is the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum , named after prominent workers and civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph , that pays tribute to and researches African American workers' history. Portions of the property were owned by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency for the past several decades before being donated to the federal government for the Pullman National Monument . Additional lots remain owned by the State of Illinois as part of The Pullman State Historic Site . It has been under the administration of the National Park Service since 2016 .

The area was designated as a National Historic Landmark on December 30, 1970 and listed on October 8, 1969 in the National Register of Historic Places , the demarcation of these two protective designations is significantly larger than the area of the Pullman National Monument .
