The flame spraying is one of the thermal coating process . With this method, powder, wire, cord and rod-shaped additional materials can be processed and sprayed onto component surfaces. The necessary process energy results from the combustion of a fuel gas- oxygen mixture. Additional inert gases or compressed air serve to increase the kinetic energy of the gas flow, the free jet formation, as a protective gas, to atomize molten material (in wire flame spraying), to convey powder (in powder flame spraying) and to cool the torch. Depending on the fuel gas used, flame temperatures of up to approx. 3160 ° C (with acetylene-oxygen) can be achieved. Typical fuel gases are acetylene, propane, ethene, methane, natural gas and hydrogen. The range of materials that can be processed includes metals, ceramics and plastics. The main areas of application are corrosion protection (primarily metals and plastics) and wear protection (primarily metals and ceramics). The processing of zinc is also known as "spray galvanizing". The result is a smooth surface with a layer thickness of 80–150 µm.

The term “plastic flame spraying”, which is often used, refers to the processing of thermoplastic polymers. To produce plastic coatings, the object to be coated is heated with a fan. Then you blow plastic powder inside the reducing flame.

In connection with the production of plastic film capacitors , the metal flame spraying used is also referred to as Schoopierung ; the electrical contact made in this way is also called this.
