Powder tower

The Powder Tower is part of the former city fortifications of Anklam . The building, in addition to the Anklamer stone gate is along with remains of the walls of the only remaining part of the fortification with former total of six gates, located in the south Badstüberstraße of the market.

history

The tower was first mentioned in 1449 and 1462 as a prisoner tower. At the time of the feuds between the city of Anklam and the Schwerine family , the defense tower was completed as part of the medieval fortifications, probably emerging from the Koppentor, one of the seven entrances to the city of Anklam . After the expansion of the gate to the Wiekhaus, there was an increase in the watchtower and lair tower. Its current appearance is shaped by the last major construction work as part of the conversion to a powder store.

The approximately 20 meter high structure held a key strategic position, as it was located between the widely spaced city gates Steintor and Stolper Tor and it was the only elevated point of defense in this section. The Powder Tower once had a conical top and a protruding battlement , comparable to the Hohen Stein , which was destroyed in the Thirty Years War . Mentioned for the first time in 1463 as Vangenturm, it was used as a prison until the 16th century and then as a powder magazine.

The astronomer Gustav Spörer used the tower as an observatory from 1860 to 1874, Otto Lilienthal was one of his students during this time . In 1998 the powder tower was extensively restored and is now one of the sights of the city of Anklam.
