The Hohe Stein is a land defense tower in the southeast of Anklam . It is located a few meters from the carriageway, west of federal highway 109 .

Watch tower

A watch tower as part of the Anklamer Landwehr was first mentioned in 1412. The Hohe Stein was built in 1458 as a brick building. It is a cylindrical tower with a crenellated wreath and a brick helmet with a hexagonal floor plan. It is also provided with several loopholes. Originally the tower built on a hill was surrounded by a moat. A guard lit a fire on an iron pan at the top of the spire as the enemy approached. The city was warned by smoke signals if enemy troops were approaching, as this area of the Feldmark was not visible from the two church towers in Anklam. From the battlements of the Anklamer Steintor , which probably got its current height at the time of the construction of the Wartturm, attention was paid to signals from the Hohe Stein. So you could prepare for a siege in time.

Anklamer Landwehr

The Anklamer Landwehr is one of the most impressive ground monuments in northeast Germany and was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Century erected. The Hohe Stein served as a way passage, protection from robbers and the landed gentry. The Anklamer Landwehr enclosed the old and the new field and thus an area of about 24 km². The Hohe Stein was one of originally four control rooms from which the entrances to the urban area were monitored. The reason for the construction of the Landwehr was the frequent attacks by the Schwerine on the city area. It largely followed the topographical conditions and sealed off the area of the city, which protruded far to the south and south-east and was not naturally protected by swamps or watercourses, from the rural surroundings over a distance of around 1700 meters. During archaeological excavations carried out in 1999 in the area of the route of the federal highway 109, the construction of the Landwehr could be documented. In front of a 2.5 to 3 meter high earth wall, which was planted with a thick hedge of thorns, there was a ditch about 2 meters deep, which was additionally protected by a row of palisades .

In combination with the Hohe Stein, the Anklamer Landwehr does not occupy an exceptional position among the Landwehr in Germany. A similar constellation with a tower is known from the Parchimer Landwehr , and the horse tower , the Döhrener tower and the Lister tower have been preserved from the Landwehr of the city of Hanover . The Landwehr of Speyer had six such Wait .
