The Parchim Landwehr was the outer, late medieval border security ring around the Mecklenburg town of Parchim from the 14th century. Larger and well-preserved remains can still be seen south of Parchim in the district of Kiekindemark , near Spornitz and in the north of the urban area in the form of overgrown earth walls. Another component was the now listed tower near Stralendorf , as the northern passage of the Landwehr .

history

The emergence of the Landwehr is estimated to have taken place after 1366. It consisted of extensive earthworks around the town of Parchim, three to five meters high and eight to ten meters wide. The walls were mostly planted with thick, often thorny bushes. Earth trenches were upstream on both sides.

The Parchimer Landwehr served to protect the city. It was the outer ring of the medieval city defense and border security systems in Parchim. Above all, the overgrown earth walls made it difficult and impossible for robber knights and thieves to drive away the herds of cattle grazing in the town's field marrow . Even before a herd overcame the wall with its trenches, the city guard or the Parchim residents were able to reach the scene and protect their livestock.

Preserved remains

Remnants of the earth walls are preserved to the south, west and north of the city of Parchim. Due to erosion , among other things , these no longer exist today to the extent they were then.

A wall about 6.7 kilometers long stretches from the Sonnenberge near the Parchim district of Kiekindemark in a northerly direction to the northeast of Spornitz. At Kiekindemark the mound is now densely overgrown with young forest. The upstream trench can still be clearly seen. To the north, the wall overgrown with deciduous trees and scrub separates arable land and it is traversed by the federal road 191 and the Parchim – Ludwigslust railway line .

Another remnant of the Landwehr, which is about 1.8 kilometers long, stretches south from Kiekindemark to the municipal boundary of Groß Godems .

In the north, on the municipal boundary between Parchim and Rome, a preserved earth wall divides arable land between the state road 16 to Mestlin and the Red Brook over a length of about 3.2 kilometers. On this route, already in the municipal area of Rome, there is also the now listed watchtower at the northern passage of the Parchimer Landwehr. The tower with loopholes , first known as the stone castle , was used for observation and defense purposes. In the event of danger, the city guard in the former Wockertor could be informed by light or sound signals. The building has been called the Fangelturm since the beginning of the 19th century , so it was also used as a prison. The round brick tower is one of the oldest preserved secular structures in Mecklenburg.
