Powder Tower in Riga

The Powder Tower ( Latvian : Pulvertornis ) in Riga is a fortified gunpowder warehouse from the 17th century and part of the Riga city fortifications .

In place of the powder tower , there was previously the sand tower, which was built in the 14th century . At that time the tower secured the way to the city via the Great Sand Road (hence the name). The sand tower was destroyed in the 17th century and the powder tower, which is still preserved today, was built on the same site.

The Powder Tower served the German-Baltic Corps Rubonia as a convent headquarters .

In the 1930s the tower received an extension that is now the Latvian War Museum . Since October 29, 1998 it has been registered in the Latvian register of monuments under the number 6570 .
