Life

Early work Frauenaurach von Osten (1839)

At the age of 16, Haag became a student of Albert Christoph Reindel at the Nuremberg Art School in 1836 . Supported and encouraged by his teacher, he attended the art academy in Munich between 1844 and 1846 . At this time he achieved his first successes as a portraitist of prominent personalities. He then continued his education in Brussels.

In 1847 Haag went on a study trip to Great Britain , where he discovered watercolor painting for himself in London . 1847/48 Haag lived and worked in Rome . In the summer of 1848 he returned to London and became a student at the Royal Academy of Arts . The Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha noticed him during a study trip to Tyrol and shortly afterwards introduced him to Queen Victoria . He received several commissions from her, including the well-known painting Evening in Balmoral . During this time, Haag also became a British citizen. In 1850 he became a member of the Old Water Color Society . In the same year he made his first trip to the Rhine.

Between 1852 and 1857, Haag was a member of the German Artists' Association in Rome. In the following years he undertook several extensive study trips through Egypt , Palestine and Syria and from then on devoted himself almost exclusively to oriental subjects . As early as 1867, Haag had set up a large studio in Hampstead (London) , which he decorated in an “oriental style”. In 1864 he acquired the ruins of a tower in the city wall, the so-called "Red Tower", in Oberwesel am Rhein and expanded it into a summer residence with a studio. In 1903 Carl Haag and his wife, Ida, moved to Oberwesel and lived in the tower that is named after him until his death. The International Carl Haag Society was founded in Oberwesel on January 17, 2015.
