Pulvinar (CNS)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The pulvinar (from Latin pulvinar "cushion") is a large thalamic core area and adjoins the thalamic nuclei ( nuclei thalami ) caudally . Under the pulvinar are the knee cusps ( corpora geniculata laterale et mediale ) of the metathalamus .

The pulvinar maintains reciprocal point-to-point connections to the association areas in the parietal and occipital lobes . These association areas are surrounded by the somatosensitive , visual and acoustic primary fields and probably play a major role in the connection of these various incoming sensory / sensory information. This area receives afferents from other thalamic nuclei, in particular from the intralaminar nuclei.
