Punke is an outdated term for a prostitute that is only used in the Bremen area .

In the 18th century, the Punken stood on what was then the Punkendeich , a section of today's Osterdeich between Wall and Dobbensiel, and earned their living there. Since prostitution was not permitted within the city, the punks had to go outside the city wall. The Bremen ice bet has been held here every year since 1829 until today .

The Bremer Fahrgastschifffahrtsgesellschaft Hal över , which operates the Sielwall ferry across the river Weser at the level of the former Punkendeich , named one of its passenger ships Punke in 1990 and is reminiscent of this old Bremen term.
