Punmu is an Aboriginal Martu settlement in Western Australia in the middle of the Great Sand Desert , about 600 kilometers southeast of Port Hedland . 142 people lived here in 2016.

The Aboriginal settlement, which can be reached in 8.5 hours from Port Hedland on a dirt road under good weather conditions , was built in 1981 on Lake Dora in the Rudall River National Park .

The Martu have held one of the largest native titles in Australia since 2002 , which extends over an area of ​​136,000 kilometers, which also includes the Telfer gold mine .

Right from the start, it was important to the Martu to set up a school in their settlement, the RAWA School . The settlement consists of several residential buildings and a school building, a shop and a workshop. There is a ban on alcohol in the village.

In summer, temperatures reach around 50 ° C and in winter around 0 ° C.
