The Purvis Glacier is a glacier that flows mainly in a northeastern direction on the north coast of South Georgia into the western section of Possession Bay .
Participants in the Second German Antarctic Expedition (1911–1912) under the direction of Wilhelm Filchner mapped it and named it as the John Murray Glacier after the British oceanographer John Murray . However, in order to avoid possible confusion with the Murray Glacier in East Antarctic Victoria Land, this designation was discarded. The current name is named after Petty Officer J. Purvis of the Royal Navy , participant in the Discovery Investigations off South Georgia from 1928 to 1930.
