Fredevald Castle , also Pustý zámek (German Fredewald , also Wüstes Schloss ) is the name given to the remains of a medieval castle located on a steep Klingstein cliff near Česká Kamenice in the Lusatian Mountains in the Czech Republic . Only a few parts of the castle walls are essentially preserved today. The remarkable castle rock and the surrounding area were declared a natural monument in 1956 .

history

Fredevald was probably founded as early as the 13th century by the von Michelsberg gentlemen as a protection for the nearby trade route. Fredevald was first mentioned in a document in 1406, at that time it belonged to Hynek Berka von Duba . The Berken of Duba had Fredevald to 1428, sold that year Heinrich Berka of Dubá the castle to Siegmund von Wartenberg . The people of Wartenberg used Fredevald - like other castles in the area - as a base for their raids. In 1440, the troops of the Six City League put an end to this hustle and bustle. Fredevald was besieged, eventually captured and razed. As a replacement for Fredevald, the new castle Kempnitz (Czech: Kamenický hrad) was built on the nearby castle hill ( Zámecký vrch ) near Böhmisch Kamnitz ( Česká Kamenice ).

particularities

huge fan made of Klingstein columns

The mighty phonolite ( Klingstein ) columns , which form a huge fan, are noteworthy. Some of the pillars of the castle rock reach lengths of up to 25 meters and more. This unique testimony of tertiary volcanic activity in North Bohemia continues beyond the Kamenice ( Kamenice ) in Břidličný vrch ( Schieferberg still continues). For the construction of the road in the 19th century, larger parts of the rock had to be blasted off in order to obtain the necessary construction clearance.

A very diverse plant community has developed on the castle rock. Typical are u. a .: Forest goat's beard , grove ragwort , elder-leaved valerian , blue fescue and alpine currant .
