Pyroclastic breccias are a type of pyroclastic flow deposit .

Differentiation of the deposits

The individual pyroclasts within a pyroclastic flow deposit are divided into four categories according to their grain size;

  • Ash (diameter of the grain <2 mm)
  • Lapilli (2–64 mm)
  • Bombs (> 64 mm, rounded shape)
    • This category also distinguishes between bombs and breadcrust bombs whose surface has burst.
  • Blocks (> 64 mm, unrounded shape)

Based on the amount of species contained in the deposit, pyroclasts, the total deposit can be classified.

definition

A pyroclastic breccia is a deposit that consists of more than 75 percent blocks.
