Qarch Quda

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Qarch Quda describes a form of marriage that was previously widespread among the Uzbeks in Central Asia, a type of exchange of women : If a family cannot afford a bride price, they have the option of exchanging a wife with another family through Qarch Quda. The virtual bride price (kalym) of the two brides involved must be the same, and the ceremonies associated with the marriage must take place simultaneously and with the same equipment.

Qarch Quda can take place between related as well as between unrelated families and usually leads to a particularly close relationship between the two households or entire ancestry groups ( lineages ).
