The Qotour Valley Bridge is a railway bridge on the single- track Van – Tabriz railway across the Qotour Valley in the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan .

meaning

The Van – Tabriz railway is the only rail link between Turkey and Iran. The construction of the railway was initiated by the CENTO in order to bind the two former allies of the USA closer together.

construction

The Qotour Viaduct was built by the American Bridge Company between April 1969 and March 1970 based on a design by Sverdrup & Parcel . The individual parts of the bridge were manufactured in the USA and brought to the construction site by ship and train. The arch of the bridge was erected in cantilever construction with the help of a 660 m long cable crane with a load capacity of 30 t spanning the valley . Both sides of the arch were anchored back to the valley slopes with 59 mm thick ropes until the end of the arch.

Technical parameters

The bridge is about 20 km southwest of Choy . It is 442.9 m long and crosses the river 119 m above the valley floor. Its main opening consists of a two- hinged steel truss arch with a span of 223.1 m. It has a trapezoidal cross-section and is a maximum of 13.19 m wide. The two upper and lower chords have a maximum distance of 8.59 m. On the truss arch are 8 steel truss posts up to 37 m high, which support the track girders made of welded box girders. The approach bridges made of 2 riveted sheet metal girders stand on concrete pillars. The steel used weighs 3,315 t.
