Quadrille based on motifs from the opera "Der Blitz"

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The quadrille based on motifs from the opera “Der Blitz” is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 59). It was first performed on December 8, 1848 in Dommayers Casino in Vienna.

Remarks

The quadrille were put together from motifs from the opera L'éclair (English title: The Lightning , occasionally The Day of Fate ) by Jacques Fromental Halévy , which is seldom played today, if at all . It was one of the few compositions that Johann Strauss brought out in the months after the end of the revolution of 1848 . Because of his sympathy for this revolution, for some time only Dommayers Casino was available to him for performances. Of course, his revolutionary works were banned. In the course of the following months and years, however, the composer succeeded in making his attitude towards the revolution forgotten by repeatedly demonstrating his loyalty to the state. The quadrille discussed here was rather unsuccessful. Subsequently, the work was seldom played, if at all, and was forgotten. This was also due to the large number of such works by the composer, which displaced each other from the concert programs. In addition, the orchestral version was lost. The CD recording mentioned below was made with the help of an arrangement by Professor Ludwig Babinski based on the piano reduction.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 6 minutes and 31 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
