profile

As an independent company, Quante was a leading provider in the field of telecommunications technology . One of the most famous products was the company's telephone booths .

In addition to the location in Wuppertal, the company had a location in Hattingen as well as plants in Pont-Chateau and Rungis in France, Snailwell in England and Frankenmarkt in Austria. In 2000 the company had around 2,400 employees worldwide. In 1999 an annual turnover of almost 700 million  DM and a profit of 10.9 million DM were achieved.

history

The master locksmith Wilhelm Quante founded a company in Elberfeld (today a part of Wuppertal) in 1892 , which dealt with the production of stoves and ovens.

Just a few years after it was founded, the company was accepting repair orders for telegraphs and telephone lines from the Imperial Post . In 1910 the factory for telegraph construction materials and equipment followed (later: Wilhelm Quante special factory for telecommunications equipment ). In the war years between 1942 and 1944, workers from Russia and the Ukraine were employed, but the records of what happened at that time are very sketchy. As a result of this responsibility, Quante joined the “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” foundation initiative of the German economy.

The name was changed to Quante Fernmeldemontagen GmbH in 1967.

The company was converted into a stock corporation in 1988, followed by the IPO on March 22, 1991. The shares were traded on the stock exchanges in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart. The capital raised was invested by acquiring the French Poyet group.

In 2000, Quante AG was taken over by 3M ( Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co ), the company had acquired the entire block of 5,200,000 common shares from the Quante family and was therefore in possession of 50 percent of the share capital. For the remaining shares on the open market, 3M made a takeover offer that was slightly improved over three months. The last general meeting took place in September 2000. At the end of the year, what is now a subsidiary of 3M, was restructured. In 2003, all small shareholders were bought out through a squeeze-out and the headquarters were relocated from Wuppertal to Neuss.

The building ensemble

The former Quante building complex, now the Ideon business park

In Wuppertal-Elberfeld, the Quante had a larger ensemble of buildings on Uellendahler Strasse . After the takeover by 3M, the location was given up. Later on, the 50,000 m² area was taken over by Riedel Funk- und Intercomtechnik 2004, which rented out part of the building complex there as a high-tech corporate park ("Ideon Business Park").
