Quartz Composer is a program from Apple with which you can develop so-called patches , which are then executed by the Quartz graphics engine.

The patches are based on other patches that are connected to one another via inputs and outputs. Patches can provide functions such as filters or effects, generate simple images and animations and incorporate inputs such as mouse and keyboard.

The system even uses Quartz Composer patches in some places, e.g. B. with the visualizers in iTunes , the effects in iChat or with the screen savers .

The finished patches can be loaded and executed in another application, the Quartz Composer Visualizer . It is also possible to display and execute the patches over a network. This means that several computers with several screens can be linked together to form a “screen wall”, each of which only shows part of the patch.

Quartz Composer has been part of the Xcode Tools since Mac OS X 10.4 . Since Xcode 4.3 (which is only delivered in a single app bundle), Quartz Composer is no longer an official part of the Xcode Tools, but can be downloaded free of charge by registered developers in the download area.
