News (English messages ) is an instant messaging - and SMS / MMS software from Apple . It is included in the macOS and iOS operating systems and integrated with Facetime . Up to Mac OS X 10.7 the program was called iChat .

iOS version

When the iPhone was introduced in 2007, an app called Text was preinstalled that could only send SMS. With iPhone OS 3, it was renamed Messages and now it also supports MMS. The short message service iMessage was introduced with iOS 5 ; since then the app has also been available on iPod touch and iPad .

OS X version

In August 2002, iChat was released as part of Mac OS X 10.2. Initially it only supported the Rendezvous (later “Bonjour”) and AIM protocols . In 2003 the program was expanded to include audio and video chat functions. In the years that followed, support for the XMPP , Google Talk, and Yahoo Messenger protocols was added.

In the OS X Mountain Lion operating system , iChat was renamed "Messages" and has also supported iMessage since then . Even before Mountain Lion was released on July 25, 2012, a beta version of Nachrichten was available for free on Apple's homepage.
