The Queen Maud Mountains is a mountain range in Antarctica . It forms the part of the Transantarctic Mountains that delimits the Ross Sea to the south towards the polar plateau . The highest peak of the Queen Maud Mountains is the 4070  m high Mount Fridtjof Nansen . The mountains range from the Beardmore Glacier in the west to the Reedy Glacier in the east and from the Ross Ice Shelf in the north to the Polar Plateau in the south.

The Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen climbed these mountains in November 1911 over the centrally located Axel-Heiberg glacier on his way to the geographic South Pole as part of his Antarctic expedition (1910-1912). Amundsen named it after the Norwegian Queen Maud (1869–1938). The entire mountain range was mapped during the Antarctic expeditions of the American polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd in the 1930s and 1940s. This was followed by surveys as part of the United States Antarctic Research Program and by New Zealand expeditions from the 1950s to the 1970s.
