Queen Salote College (also Kolisi Fefine , "Girls College", The Girl's College ) is a private girls' school in Tonga . It is the only girls' school in Tonga and was named by King Taufaʻahau Tupou IV after Queen Sālote Lupepauʻu .

history

The school is located on Vaha'akolo Road across from Mala'ekula , Tongatapu, on the site where Tupou College was originally located in 1866. From 1870, girls in Tonga were also taught at Tupou College, after Rev. James Egan Moulton had founded the institution four years earlier. The girls should be trained to become good mothers and wives. In 1873, however, these classes were suddenly abandoned because Mr. Baker believed that behavior between girls and boys was improper. Only in 1881 could girls be admitted again.

In 1921 Tupou College was relocated to Nafualu (today the Siaʻatoutai Theological College is located there ) because the space and buildings were no longer sufficient for the growing number of students. The girls stayed in the original buildings. However, it was not until 1926 that Queen Salote College became independent when separate exams were introduced.

In February 2018, the college suffered severe damage from a cyclone .

Teaching

The school follows the guidelines of the government of Tonga, which is based on the curriculum of New Zealand . In addition, traditional Tongan handicrafts are taught, including weaving and knitting of mats and taʻovala , kiekie and tapa-making . Grades 1 to 7 also have classes in Catering & Hospitality (dinner preparation and hospitality). There are also courses for raising children.

Publications

The school runs a magazine that is published annually, the Maamaloa Magazine .
