The Queen Victoria School is a boarding school in the Scottish town of Dunblane in the Council Area Stirling, which has existed since 1908 . The school building was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest monument category A in 1971. The associated chapel is also independently classified as a Category A building.

history

The school, funded by the British Ministry of Defense , was built after the Second Boer War ended in 1908 and opened on September 28 of the same year. It is only open to children of Scottish military personnel. Initially a school for boys only, access has been open to girls since 1996. The teaching staff is now largely recruited from civilian teachers.

School operation

Although funded by the Department of Defense, the Queen Victoria School is not a military school. However, the visit is still only open to the children of Scottish soldiers. In addition to the usual subjects, the students are also taught military marching and parade. Several times a year, parades take place with the involvement of the school marching band. Around 250 students attend the secondary school who live exclusively on the school premises as internal students.

building

The Queen Victoria School is on the northern edge of Dunblane. The Scottish architect John Archibald Campbell was responsible for the design in the Scottish Neo-Renaissance style . The four-story building has a roughly E-shaped floor plan. The facades are plastered with Harl with contrasting natural stone details . The main facade is symmetrical.

chapel

The chapel is located south of the school building. Like the school building, it was designed by John Campbell and built between 1908 and 1909. The cruciform church with a low crossing tower is designed in the style of late Scottish neo-Gothic . Natural stone details are set off from the Harl-plastered facades. The crossing tower closes with a slate-covered, pointed helmet.
