Queensway Underground Station
Queensway is an underground station on the London Underground in the City of Westminster . It is located on the north edge of Kensington Gardens , at the intersection of Queensway and Bayswater Road and is served by the Central Line . In 2013, 8.58 million passengers used the station. About 200 meters further north, also on Queensway, is Bayswater station .
The station located in the Travelcard tariff zone 1 was opened on July 30, 1900 by the Central London Railway , the predecessor company of the Central Line, and was initially called Queen's Road . The name was changed to Queensway on September 9, 1946. The station building was designed by Harry Bell Measures , as is customary on the Central London Railway .
From May 8, 2005 to June 14, 2006 the station was closed for renovation and modernization work. This measure was necessary to replace the old elevators , which had recently become very prone to failure. In addition, the station was modernized and newly tiled. Metronet , the company responsible for the renovation, should have completed the work by May 9, 2006, but this date had to be postponed twice.
